The weird kids
were visionaries and everyone else is catching up.
Spiritual, emotional and intellectual growth requires that we stretch beyond our typical reactions and consider what a more nuanced response could be.
As I consider the nonlinear path we choose as opposed to the nonlinear path that chooses us, I see the same rules apply: the kids whose interests don’t align with popular culture are viewed as and spoken of as ‘weird.’
‘Weird’ is the facile description for people many don’t understand and, perhaps, envy because those kids have escaped what they may consider mediocrity. Weirdos have the confidence to reject aspects of a culture that don’t suit them.
To break from tradition is to risk nonacceptance into a society whose values don’t dovetail with yours - so, how much of a risk is that? Isn’t it just a blessing?
What you might want to say about those ‘weird’ kids or adults is that they might be visionaries with whom you could have an enlightening and meaningful conversation. You might never be close friends because these visionaries and enlightened beings operate in another frequency, but it might be cathartic and/or educational to put down your unkind words that are meant as insults and just listen.
Just as the ‘weirdo’ can let go of cultures that don’t fit, they can let go of people who don’t understand.
